This directory does not publish price tables. Pool pricing in Arizona changes with material costs, labor demand and each yard, so any single number would be out of date quickly. What the editor can say is what moves the price. The shell type (gunite, fiberglass or vinyl) sets the base. Size and depth add excavation, steel and plaster. Interior finish, tile, decking, equipment and water features each add a line. Site access, soil, caliche and utility relocation can add more. The clearest way to learn current pricing is to collect three written bids for the same design. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors recommends the same as of October 2026.
The pump is the main electrical load on a residential pool. The added cost depends on the pump type, the hours it runs and the utility rate plan. A single-speed pump running long hours in summer uses far more energy than a variable-speed pump turning the same water over at low speed. Pumps do not need to run 24 hours a day. The goal is to filter the full pool volume at least once daily, which most Arizona owners reach with longer summer and shorter winter run times. Running at night on a time-of-use plan can cut cost further. A builder or service company can size the run schedule for a specific pump.
These are all small-pool terms. A "spool" is a spa-sized pool, usually with jets and a heater, built for cooling off and soaking rather than swimming. A "cowboy pool" is a galvanized stock tank set up as an above-ground pool, often with a small pump and filter. A "splash pool" or plunge pool is a small, shallow inground pool. In Arizona all three fall under the state barrier law when the water is at least 18 inches deep and the pool is wider than 8 feet. Inground versions need a building permit in the cities the editor checked. A pre-manufactured spa falls under the ROC's B-10 classification, and a built-in spool under B-5, as of October 2026.
Arizona pools can reach bath temperature by July. The options are evaporation, shade and mechanical cooling. Running a fountain, aerator or deck jets at night cools the water through evaporation, which also costs water. Shade sails or trees over part of the pool cut daytime heat gain. Removing a solar cover at night lets heat escape. A heat pump with a chiller mode, or a dedicated pool chiller, cools water actively and is the only method that works on demand. Lighter interior finishes absorb less heat than dark pebble. Builders can plumb for a chiller during construction so it can be added later without opening the deck.
Heating is a choice, not a requirement. In the Phoenix and Tucson lowlands an unheated pool is comfortable from roughly late spring to early fall. A gas heater or heat pump extends the season into the cooler months, and a spa almost always needs one. Pools in Flagstaff, Prescott and other high-elevation areas see real winters and need freeze protection. Low-desert pools are not winterized the way northern pools are. Owners keep the pump running on a shorter schedule, keep chemistry balanced and use freeze-protection settings on the equipment during the few nights that drop below freezing. A builder in the region can advise on the right equipment for the elevation.
A saltwater pool is still a chlorine pool. A salt cell generates chlorine from dissolved salt instead of the owner adding it. Owners like the softer feel and steadier sanitizer level. The trade-offs in Arizona are specific. Salt cells work harder in hot water and need regular cleaning for calcium scale, which forms fast in hard desert water. Salt can attack some natural stone coping and nearby metal, so material choices matter at design time. Draining a salt pool to landscaping needs salt-tolerant plants. A conventional chlorine pool costs less upfront and is simpler to repair. Both systems depend on balanced pH and stabilizer in intense sun. Dosing questions belong with a pool service professional.
The shell and the finish have different lives. A well-built gunite or shotcrete shell can last for many decades, and old Arizona pools from the 1960s and 1970s are still in service after remodels. The interior finish is a wear item and is replaced several times over the shell's life. Fiberglass shells are also long-lived, with the gelcoat surface being the part that ages. Equipment such as pumps, filters, heaters and salt cells is replaced on a shorter cycle. This directory does not publish year counts because they vary with chemistry, soil and workmanship. The best predictors are a licensed builder, proper steel and shell thickness, and consistent water balance.
This directory does not publish value statistics, and the editor has not found a reliable Arizona-wide figure. What is known is that pools are common in the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas. A pool rarely puts off local buyers the way it might elsewhere. A pool almost never returns its full construction cost at sale. Condition matters more than presence. A clean pool with current equipment and a compliant barrier is a selling point. A stained, leaking or unfenced pool is a negotiation item. Buyers with young children may want the barrier and may ask for a pool inspection. Anyone planning a pool for resale alone should talk to a local agent first.
